Guides and Stalkers

Hill stalkers know that most visiting hunters have come from the "office desk" on to the mountain. He will set a walking pace to suit the hunter, giving him a better chance when it comes time to fire a shot.

The Roe Stalker will travel at a much slower pace. He will often stop and quietly watch an area for a roe deer to show. He will also know how his deer act in the early morning compared with the evening outings. The Roe stalker is able to assess a buck for you quickly. Language barriers can be set aside as the stalker is liable to communicate with you in sign language - especially if you have a wonderful buck standing 100mtrs away!

After you've taken the successful shot, the stalker will prepare the animal for transport home. This could be by machine, pony or just human strength. Sometimes there may be a chance to go for another shot at a deer. The stalker can then prepare your trophy, usually for you to take away with you.

While stalking hinds and Roe does in the winter, it may be advisable to contact the stalker before you travel to your hunting area. He will be quite happy to advise you on the best kind of clothing you may need.

Whatever deer you decide to try for, remember that the stalker is a countryman as well as a deer man. He will be able to show you other wildlife and plants. If you have any questions about the deer he will be only to glad to tell you the answers and probably a little bit extra too. While stalking, his priority is for the welfare of the deer and then for you to have a safe shot. Listen to what he says about the distance of the shot, any wind changes, where to walk kneel or crawl and finally when you are allowed to take the shot. The stalker is there to give you a good day and if you come home with a smile on your face, then certainly so will he.
